The Government Degree College Tral was established in 1988.

The Department of Persian came into existence in 1988.

Introduction

Persian (Farsi) is a Classical Language of India ruled for more than 600 years. It (Farsi) is one of the western Iranian languages within the Indo Iranian branch of the indo European language family. This language is spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, (Officially Known as Dari) and Tajikistan (officially known as Tajik (since the Soviet era) Uzbekistan and some other regions which historically were personate societies and considered as part of Greater Iran. There are 11 million native speakers of this language. Persian has three main forms, commonly known as Old Persian, Middle Persian and Modern Persian, which include Dari and Tajik. In the present day world Persian is the official language of Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Persian has also been the prestigious cultural language in other regions of western Asia, Central Asia and south Asia by the various empires based in the regions.

The Kashmir has cultural traditions, religious atmosphere and Sufi traditions and religo-cultural values acquired from central Asia. Art and archetecture resembles also the cultural exchanges between the people of the continent. 

 Programme/Course outcome (Prospectus)

The Persian language and literature is being taught in various colleges of the Kashmir and limited number of students opt this as their subject for study resulting their easy absorption in government sector like School Education department, Higher Education Department, Tourism Department, Culture Departments like Cultural Academy, Archives, Archaeology and Museums, Research and Publications Department, translation centers, Media Centers etc. The students also get absorbed in various research establishments of the country because Persian has been the official language of India for centuries and Persian records are everywhere in the country preserved in manuscripts and Archival form.  In addition to these government establishments, the Persian students also get adjusted in the Social Welfare department and other administrative Departments especially revenue because all the old land records are either in Persian language or in Urdu with majority of Persianate vocabulary. The students have bright futures in the public sector also because the language is spoken in countries like Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajkistan and Afghanistan with whom the country has good relations and does trade at high levels. The business perspective and avenues for the Persian students are high at their choice and interests. 

 Programme offered

 B. A. and Honours in Persian

 The College offers B. A., with Persian as a Major and Minor Subject. The B. A. programme is of three year duration consisting of six semesters however B.A. Honors is of 8 semesters 

Eligibility 

The students who have passed 10+2 in Arts, Science or Commerce are eligible to opt Persian as Major, Minor, multidisciplinary
